Axiom Verge (Switch) Review
We Liked?
- Deep explorative gameplay
- Wonderful soundtrack
- Interesting story
- Creative puzzles
Not So Much?
- Returning after a break in play is difficult as you have no idea where or what you're doing
- Not as responsive as you'd like it to be
- As great as it is the gameplay loop gets repetitive
Axiom Verge is a very solid Metroid inspired title that gets an awful lot of things right and feels at home on the Switch.
xiom Verge has been around for a few years now. It’s been on a lot of platforms and it’s even been on a hand held platform before courtesy of the Vita. Yet Axiom Verge has never felt more at home than on Nintendo’s Switch platform.
You all know the drill by now, right? Axiom Verge is an action platform adventure title that draws inspiration from 8-bit classics like Metroid. Many also sight Castlevania but, tbh, it’s just a passing nod. This title takes the things Metroid offered and pushes them to a new level.
Awaking as a bewildered scientist after an accident you’re searching through a massive series of environments trying to work out exactly where you are and what’s going on. Like it’s inspiration the game offers up several areas, all of which as usually visited multiple times as you discover more weapons and gadgets that will help you to reach new places.
The superb feel, exploration, design and play of Axiom Verge has been repeated throughout the internet, so I’ll not regurgitate what you already know. Instead let’s take a look at how well the game has moved over to the Nintendo Switch.
And, to be honest, like my recent Night in the Woods review, Axiom Verge feels like it has been waiting for the Switch. It looks great, clean and crisp in handheld or docked mode. The ability to suspend and resume wherever you are just helps make it the pinnacle of the versions available.
Final Thoughts
Axiom Verge is a very solid Metroid inspired title that gets an awful lot of things right. It feels at home on the Switch. All the criticisms that have been levelled at the game throughout are still relevant today as this is ‘just’ the same game once more.
If you’ve yet to play Axiom Verge, enjoy this style of game and have a Switch then it’s really a no-brainer… especially as Nintendo have yet to port over their series to the device.
