A quirky and challenging game that is pure eye candy.

Not so much?

It is *very* challenging (those looking for a casual experience need not apply), and camera issues do pop up here and there.

Final Fiendish Findings?

Strength of the Sword 3 is an extremely challenging game that will push your skills to the limits, right from the start. If you are interested in a casual and relaxing gaming experience, then keep looking because this is not the game for you. However, if you are looking for something different, something quirky, and something ever so challenging, Strength of the Sword 3 is definitely worth checking out.

“It never gets easier. You just get better.”Strength-of-the-Sword-3-5-615x340

Strength of the Sword 3 is a challenging new offering from indie developer Ivent Games. Featuring a combination of colorful and quirky artwork and an amped up difficulty level, this is a game that will have you throwing your controllers in both frustration and glee. Do you have what it takes to prove the strength of your sword?

The developers of Strength of the Sword 3 have chosen to sacrifice the idea of a compelling story line in favor of straight up hand to hand combat. While you are treated to an entertaining and visually appealing opening sequence that sets the stage for your quest as protector of the city charged with vanquishing its enemies, there is little story development to speak of. This is a game that’s all about the fighting.

Each level is set up as an arena fight, where you will test your sword against a variety of very challenging opponents. While most games give you at least one or two “gimme” levels at the start to help you learn the game and get you used to the controls, Strength of the Sword 3 just don’t play like that. Don’t be surprised at all when your first rather unimposing challenger immediately knocks you to the ground – this is the way of Strength of the Sword. The levels start you out with one opponent, but once he’s out of the way more will drop by to challenge you, ending in a boss fight that will test every skill you have learned.

It’s the skills you have yet to master that you need to worry about though, as the very unforgiving AI in this game simply will not stand for desperate button mashing. You’ll need to study your opponents closely for weaknesses, learn how and when to effectively employ combos, work tirelessly at leveling up, and flat out be prepared to die over and over again in your quest for (eventual) dominance. If you do get stuck on a particular level (and you probably will), heading over to the challenge pit is always a good strategy. There you can battle droves of enemies in a bid for points which can be used to purchase items to boost your play in story mode, and work your way up the online charts as well.

I’m not generally a fan of games that are difficult simply for the sake of being so, but I found Strength of the Sword 3 appealing right from the start. A big part of its appeal is the creative and colorful artwork that for some reason put me immediately in mind of Oddworld (and that’s always a good thing). Simply put, the game is beautiful to look at, and offers enough lot of variety in enemy styles, weapons, and arenas to give you plenty of things to gaze upon. The game also has a quirky sense of humor, from its name (there *is*no Strength of the Sword one or two) to the one liners that pop up when new enemies enter the arena. It’s nice to see a developers that don’t take themselves too seriously.
