Easy to use, even for beginners.

Not so much?

Not for geometry haters.

Final Fiendish Findings?

Deco Sketch is an addicting photo enhancement program that puts a little (or a lot) of geometry in your albums, without being overly difficult to use. For those new to the art, it is simple to pick up on, and pre-set brushes make editing your first photos a breeze. For experienced artists, there are color palettes and brush options galore. Either way, you’ll easily show up all those unenhanced vacation photos on your Facebook wall, and have a great time doing it

Full Fiendish Findings...

Look out, instagram – there’s a new app in town. mzl.kmchpaau.320x480-75

Let’s face it; anyone can take a picture. Not everyone, though, can take a *good* picture, and even fewer have the skills to turn what was once a simple photograph into a work of art. With the Deco Sketch app, anyone – from the experienced artist to an amateur doodler – can make a gasp-worthy photo to share with friends and family, all with nothing but their mobile device of choice.

I mentioned instagram earlier, as it is the first app that comes to mind for most people when discussing the art of enhancing photos. Really though, Deco Sketch is more than some hipster filters to throw on last week’s bachelor party pictures. You really can create some impressive works of art, with or without a photo as the centerpiece. What it is, basically, is a mobile art app. While it is focused on use as photo enhancement, you can just as easily create from a blank canvas, and with the amount of unique brushes and a variety of color palettes to choose from, your choices are endless.

As a relative photo enhancement noob, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the app. If you too are new to “photo fixin’”, have no fear – Deco Sketch is really easy to use. As you open the app, you will be asked to select either a photo to work with (from your device), or a blank canvas, and the orientation of the project. From there, it’s basically a blank canvas (bad joke, I know). The brushes included range from do-it-yourself geometric shapes to trails of circles to artsy grid patterns. Whether you want just a hint of enhancement, or (like me) want to load those babies up with everything on offer, it is a simple matter of selecting a color and a brush, and dragging your fingers across the screen.

In fact, you don’t even really need to select a color every time, as the app will cycle through complementary colors in the palette if you like. If you make a mistake, or just plain don’t like what you did, there are both undo and redo buttons to make playing around with things anxiety free. If you’re new to the virtual art scene, you can simply use the presets for the brushes for things like opacity, angle, and stroke width. But, if you want to play around with all the app has to offer, you can change all the settings as often as you like to whatever you like. By default, things like the draw speed affecting stroke or brush size are turned on, but you can play around with that too. It’s really just a virtual playground for your photographs, and even your kids can enjoy playing around with the blank canvas feature (I know I enjoyed it).

Of course, all of that photo enhancing isn’t worth much if you can’t share it with the world, but Deco Sketch has that covered too. You can easily save, email, print, and copy from the app – and if you have iOs6, you can tweet or Facebook your masterpieces right from the app. That’s really all you need in a photo app, and I was quite happy with the results of my handiwork – even if my artist husband was less than impressed with my talents. And that’s the thing – an app like this gives everyone the opportunity to play around with their creative sides and have a little fun, regardless of talent.
