StriimLIGHT mini Color (Bluetooth Speaker) Review

StriimLIGHT are a sweet new idea from AwoX that combines a handy LED bulb with a wireless music speaker to make a perfect two-in-one device. For this review, we tried out the StriimLIGHT mini Color, a bluetooth enabled speaker that pumps out mellow sound and cool colors in equal amounts. It’s the perfect unexpected gift for both friends in tight spaces, and anyone who loves a unique concept.

As you open the box, the StriimLIGHT looks a lot like a standard light bulb, albeit with a slightly different shape. If you’re anything like me, you’ll giggle a little bit over the fact that your light bulb comes complete with a remote before moving on to the installation. Installing your new speaker is as simple as screwing it into the nearest light socket – this can be a floor lamp, existing light fixture, desk lamp, or any other light you have handy. Because it screws right into the socket, there’s no worry about charging or loading up batteries. It uses the power from the fixture (and since it’s LED it is conservative in energy use), and turning it off is as simple as switching off your lamp.

The “Color” portion in this version refers to its ability to change colors. The remote features buttons with all nine colors, so you can easily select whichever color matches your current mood. You can also quickly switch to a plain light via the “W” button. If you’re in the mood for something little flashier, the “Flash” button cycles through all the colors sharply, and the “Smooth” button goes for smoother transitions through the rainbow for a gentle mood. It’s a cool addition that really helps set the mood to your music – and it’s just plain fun too. The remote also can control volume, mute, turn the light off and on, and even dim the lights for a romantic (or sleepy) scene. It’s a lot of features for a simple light bulb – and you can even download a remote app for your mobile device if you aren’t into the standard remote.

So all that’s cool and everything, but you don’t buy a bluetooth speaker for lights (well, not entirely anyway). A speaker is only as good as its sound, and the StriimLIGHT mini Color offers some decent jams in its space saving package. Hooking it up to your bluetooth enabled devices is as simple as turning it on, activating bluetooth on your device, and selecting the StriimLIGHT. Once you’re linked, streaming your music is as simple as pushing play on your device. For maximum sound, you’ll want to turn the volume all the way up on your device, and set your sound level via the StriimLIGHT’s remote. While it certainly isn’t going to blow out any windows with sheer sound waves, it offers a respectable volume for small rooms – and pretty mellow sound too.

The StriimLIGHT mini Color is an interesting device, simply because of its dual use nature. As a plain light bulb, it’s okay but not particularly bright – but the ability to have essentially ten differently colored light bulbs in one is pretty darn efficient. As a wireless speaker, again – it’s okay. It’s got pretty good sound, but it’s certainly not the best of the best, although its compact and unobtrusive package is perfect for those who don’t like unsightly electronics (and their cords) lying around.

When you combine it all into one package, though – it’s incredibly cool, and efficient too. The StriimLIGHT mini Color is low on energy usage, takes up virtually no space (you were going to put a light bulb into that lamp anyway) and it’s almost guaranteed to be a unique gift. Whether you’re searching for just the right gift for the guy who has everything, or an efficient solution for your tiny space, the StriimLIGHT mini Color is a perfect fit.
