Beautiful characters!
Realistic and Heart-Warming Plot!

Not so much?

Slightly slow to begin with.

Final Fiendish Findings?

Wow. The one and only word I can come up with to summarize my reading of The Sea of Tranquility, which doesn’t do it anywhere near enough justice. It was truly a master piece written by Katja Millay, and one that I had constant pleasure reading!

Wow. The one and only word I can come up with to summarize my reading of The Sea of Tranquility, which doesn’t do it anywhere near enough justice. It was truly a master piece written by Katja Millay, and one that I had constant pleasure reading!

The story centres around two protagonists; Nastya and Josh, both teenagers in High School who have both had traumatic lives that have led them to their own solitudes. Nastya was a pianist prodigy who now refuses to talk after a horrific event led to her being “murdered” and revived two and a half years ago. She only writes notes to communicate when it is a necessity. Josh, a carpenter by definition, has lost everyone in his family to terrible circumstances such as cancer, a car accident and a heart attack. But when the two finally meet, it begins a beautifully written story of love and second chances at life where they both open up to the world they shut themselves off from.

From the beginning of The Sea of Tranquility, you are made aware of the terrible past that Nastya has suffered and how it has destroyed her music career by ruining the use of her left hand. The truth behind the past slowly unveils as chapter and character developments occur. She registers with a new High School where she meets Josh and Drew. Josh, on the other hand, is cleverly written so that even in his thoughts, he keeps secretive about his past in the beginning, until the important moments that force him to look back.

The characters are so wonderfully developed in the novel, both as individuals and with each other, that there isn’t one moment when reading that I didn’t feel the emotions the characters were. They both carry the story so well that even though to start with there is a lack of dialogue, their thoughts really clench at your heart and rope you in deeper and deeper into their lives.

There are many clichés in romance novels and thankfully in The Sea of Tranquility these are few and far between. I never felt for one moment that things didn’t seem realistic. The interactions between characters, their thoughts, the events in the plot were all truly believable and had me either in a swoon, in tears, or bursting with happiness as I read the un-put-down-able novel.

Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding the characters, they also provide the book with a hysterical comedy factor. This ranges from Nastya’s and Drew’s (a friend of Nastya and Josh) innuendo jokes to snappy one liners that meant I couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I read them; which is unfortunate when you’re reading it in the quiet section of the train!

This was truly a heart-warming delight to read and I definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone. It put such a strong perspective of the troubles in my own life in comparison to those of the characters and it truly had me swallowed into the story from the first page. I am certain it will be the same with anyone who gives this book a read and I am also certain it’s one you won’t be able to put down. Congratulations to Katja Millay for writing such a fabulous book!
