Pokemon X and Y Starter Types Announced

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are the first official Pokemon games for Nintendo’s 3DS system, and it’s expected to be released this October.  Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are also likely the first official Pokemon game to not be compatible with the normal Nintendo DS systems.

For the uninitiated, Pokemon is something of a rock-paper-scissors type of game, with a heavy does of collectables and role-playing elements thrown in.  Each Pokemon has a unique element type.  The typical ones being grass, fire, and water.  As illustrated in the infographic above, water extinguishes fire, fire burns grass, and grass wins over water.  Players are encouraged to capture and train as many Pokemon as possible.

Official Pokemon titles are usually released in twos.  Each game is similar in the overall storyline, but each title typically offers a handful of unique Pokemon that can only be obtained in each game.  It’s a clever marketing scheme that gets players to buy both versions of the game in order to “catch ‘em all.”

Currently, there are over 650 Pokemon, including rare Pokemon.  There is no word yet as to how many new Pokemon will be added to the roster when Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are released.

We’ll share more details about Pokemon X and Pokemon Y for the 3DS as soon as we can.
