Improved Japanese Vita Sales Bested By PSP Last Week

PlayStation Vita sales in Japan rose by just over 5,000 units last week, but it wasn’t enough to pull the struggling handheld out of third place behind the PSP, which saw a sales increase of almost 10,000 systems.

The Vita‘s small bump up to 14.4K units was the result of the release of Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta (which debuted at #4 in the top 20 chart) and Earth Defense Force 3 Portable (which debuted at #9 and #13 with two different SKUs). Ironically, the release of the two popular franchises on the Vita was dampened by the launch SD Gundam G Generation: Overworld for Sony’s old PSP, which debuted in the top spot on the chart with an impressive 209K in sales.

As usual, both systems fell far behind Nintendo’s 3DS which sold 80K units (up from 61K in the prior week), and captured 7 spots in the top 20.
