Tons of choices on how to play.

Not so much?

Not a lot of replay value, unless you're chasing scores.

Final Fiendish Findings?

While it won’t hold a lot of replay value for gamers not chasing the leaderboards, Mamorukun Curse! is an entertaining diversion that is as challenging as you want it to be. With a variety of levels to play, and a variety of ways to play them, you’ll be happily dancing through minefields of bullets and shooting your way through a mountain of enemies.

It’s a shoot-em-up with style.MC_SS003

Mamorukun Curse! has a cutesy look about it that is deceiving, as the gameplay is anything but simple. For those unfamiliar with the genre, you basically make your way through a variety of levels, shooting everything in sight and nabbing as many power-ups as possible. There are enemies everywhere, which makes it great fun – but the real challenge comes from the oceans of bullets that are thrown at, literally covering the screen most times, requiring you to dodge in and out of their paths without getting shot – all while attempting to take down the shooters. With a variety of levels and ways to shoot your way through them, this is a game that is both frantic and addictive, however you choose to play it.

And choices are exactly what you get. Whether you choose to play in Arcade mode, Netherworld Adventures, or Story Mode, you’ll be playing through the same environments – with different ways to go about it. There are practice modes available for those who aren’t ready to jump right into the game itself, although Arcade mode does a fine job of introducing you to the mechanics of it all. The levels themselves even offer choices, as there are different paths that you can choose to get through them.

Arcade mode has you choosing your favorite character and making your way through the levels in short order, with as many continues as you need. It’s a great way to practice, and get a feel for the different character styles. You can also mix up the difficulty level, if you have trouble, by increasing lives, lengthening the timer on the levels, and decreasing difficulty. You won’t show up on the leaderboards if you make it easier, but it will help you get the hang of things faster if you’re a shoot-em-up noob.

Netherworld Adventures lets you choose three characters to make your way through a variety of adventures. Story Mode is where you get a feel for what is actually happening in the story, an appropriately anime style story of lost souls being recruited to fight the World of Darkness and save the Netherworld. You’ll choose a lineup of five different characters to play as – and character choice, as well as order, has a definite impact in how you play.

Each of them has an unlimited shooter, as well as a Curse Bullet, but the difference is in how they use them. From a screen covering spray, to a two pronged shooter, to a combination of several different types, each character’s shooting style is vastly different, and you’ll have to adjust your play accordingly. Of course, if you never die, that won’t be an issue as you’ll stay with your first choice.

Realistically though, you’re probably going to eat it more than a few times, and each time you die, you advance to the next character in your lineup. It makes for some very interesting play, and also gives you a good chance to try out the many different styles. When you need a little something extra, the Curse Bullet adds variety by either cursing your opponent or yourself, to varying results. Curses need to be recharged after use, so they are used somewhat sparingly, but by holding down and charging them up, they pack quite a wallop in tight spaces.
