A fun and charming game that hooks you right from the start.

Not so much?

It's a simple premise, that really does have doing the same thing over and over (although you really won't mind).

Knightmare-Tower-1
In a world filled with hyper realistic graphics, complicated story lines, and finger annihilating control schemes, sometimes something a little bit simpler is a welcome breath of fresh air. With Knightmare Tower you may not get a thought provoking experience that makes you question the state of our world today, but what you will get is a deceptively addicting game that will eat away hours of your time before you even notice. It’s easy to pick up on, has an inordinate amount of charm, and it’s great fun – what more could you ask for?

The basic premise in Knightmare Tower is incredibly simple (although it’s not quite so simple to master). A rocket launches our gallant knight into the air, giving you the beginning boost needed to start your flight. After that, you need to keep boosting yourself up in the air by slashing monsters in half, as well as by slashing item bubbles to collect various pickups ranging from specials ability potions to extra lives to magical horns. It’s a bit of a tough situation – you must kill the monsters before they kill you, but you also need the the monsters to boost you up before your fall slows enough for the lava to catch up with you. Timing is key if you want to get the right combos and keep yourself out of danger.

The control scheme is incredibly simple. You can move left or right, in order to position yourself over monsters over bubbles, using your arrow keys or a controller. To attack, you simply press down, which has the dual action of sending your knight hurling down and swinging the sword. If you are positioned incorrectly, your attack will end up as a fall instead, but if you time things perfectly you can even catch monsters that have started to fall below the screen. A lot of skill is needed to keep that run going, because if you die (even if you’ve made it all the way to the tenth level of the tower), you’ll need to start right back over at the bottom.

That sounds like it would get overly repetitious and frustrating really quick, but it really does not. For one thing, there’s a really nice progression, both of your skill and the difficulty of the monsters you face, that requires you to learn by going a little bit farther each time. You start out at the bottom floors with simple monsters that look mean but slash apart easily with one strike, and work your way up to things like dragons that blow fire at you and need multiple strikes to kill, or skeletons that hold giant light sabers that sear portions of the screen for seconds at a time. Figuring out how to handle each type of creature, and rescuing those princess little by little, makes for a game that has you muttering “just one more try” far after you should have gone to bed.

In addition to that progression of difficulty, there is a nice upgrade system that also helps keep things fresh. You can earn coins by collecting bags of them in item bubbles, as well as by completing specific tasks. The game gives you three goals at a time, replacing each with a new one as they are accomplished. These range from things like achieving a perfect launch, to collecting specific items or numbers of items. For the most part, you will easily accomplish these within normal gameplay, but they add a bit of challenge to mix things up.

The money you earn as you place can be used to purchase a variety of upgrades for your knight armor and accessories, as well as potions that will appear in the game in item bubbles. You can make your sword stronger, your boots faster, your knight luckier, start with more lives – all kinds of stuff, and you are able to upgrade them in whatever order you like. Earning enough cash to purchase that coveted next upgrade is another thing that keeps you playing and playing well after you should have stopped, and it all makes for a game that is surprisingly entrancing.

Knightmare-Tower-3

Knightmare Tower is a colorful, quirky game that grips you in its charming clutches and won’t let go. With gameplay that is simple to pick up but difficult to master, an engaging upgrade and goal system, and a really nice progression of difficulty, you simply won’t be able to put it down.
