An enjoyable and addictive puzzler which will appeal to all fans of the genre – especially those who remember the original Chip's Challenge.

Not so much?

Be prepared to be frustrated by some levels! And remember, it may have 3D in the title, but it's just a graphically spruced up 2D puzzler.

Woop is an alien who loves video games – so much so, in fact, that he decides to enlist the help of an Earthling to provide him with the ultimate gaming experience. Enter Chuck, a video game designer who is enlisted to devise a series of puzzles designed to test both Woop’s mind and his reflexes. As he warms to his task, Chuck’s puzzles become ever more fiendish, ensuring that even the best and the brightest will find them a challenge!

Readers of a certainage may recall a game called Chip’s Challenge, a top down puzzler that featured just short of 150 levels packed with block puzzles, hazards and monsters aplenty. Created by Chuck Sommerville, the brain behind Chip’s Challenge, Chuck’s Challenge repackages that same gameplay and spruces it up a bit for the gamers and platforms of the twenty-first century. The original was so addictive that you could forgive it for also being incredibly frustrating a lot the time, but can this modern follow-up inspire the same levels of enjoyment?

In fact, whether you’re coming to it as a Chip’s Challenge veteran or just someone who likes a good puzzle game, Chuck’s Challenge manages to deliver. The core game consists of 100 levels, ranging in difficulty from simple tutorials designed to get you started, to tough head-scratchers that may leave you stumped for a while. In every level, the goal is simple – guide Woop to the goal – but what this entails can vary dramatically. Some levels are cerebral, requiring you to solve block puzzles at your leisure; others are much faster-paced, and will see you running from monsters and making moves with split second timing. Running into a monster or treading on hazardous ground without protection equals instant death, but stupid mistakes aren’t too frustrating, thanks to the ability to hit backspace and undo your missteps without having to restart the whole level. Even so, there will be inevitably be levels that you spend a while on and grow to dislike intensely, but overall it’s an enjoyable ride that manages to capture that “just one more level” quality.

The fun isn’t over once you complete those first hundred levels, however. The game comes packaged with a level creator that lets you devise your own puzzles for you and others to try. And even if you don’t feel up to spending time making your own levels, luckily plenty of players have already submitted their attempts, which you can have a go at and then rate for quality. Some enterprising souls have even recreated levels from Chip’s Challenge, which will delight fans of the original.

It may have 3D in the title, but as far as gameplay goes, Chuck’s Challenge is essentially a 2D game. Everything looks pretty, but in some regards the graphics feel like overkill – the game could have been given a much simpler look, and it would still be just as good. Sound effects are a decent, but sadly won’t give any sort of nostalgia kick to those who remember the classic sounds of Chip’s Challenge.

Final Thoughts
Chuck’s Challenge offers a solid and fun puzzling experience that will appeal to gamers of all ages. With its mix of action-based levels, block puzzles and a wealth of user-created content, there’s plenty of brain teasing fun to occupy you whenever you have a few minutes spare for gaming.
