An interesting story line and engaging puzzles keep players engaged.

Not so much?

Doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

Final Fiendish Findings?

Brightstone Mysteries: Paranormal Hotel is a solid entry to the hidden object adventure genre. While it doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it features an interesting enough story line and challenging game play to keep players engaged. A trio of difficulty levels and a forgiving hint feature make it a game that is accessible and enjoyable to all skill levels and ages (as long as they are proficient readers).

Full Fiendish Findings...

It’s a spooky, hidden object adventure – now available for the Mac!PH_300

You are Detective Bridgit “Biggi” Brightstone, finally relaxing on the beach on your much deserved vacation – until you get a call from your boss, that is. He’s calling in a personal favor that you simply cannot refuse, so it’s “goodbye, vacation” for you. Something mysterious is happening at a hotel in France. A valuable necklace has gone missing, and a mysterious guest at the hotel lies in a coma. All signs seem to point to the paranormal (your specialty), but you aren’t going to stop until you uncover every piece of the puzzle – even if the local law aren’t too keen on your participation.

As a detective, your tasks in Brightstone Mysteries: Paranormal Hotel lean towards the investigating and interviewing type, and the game play reflects that. Your time with the game is very heavy on story development, which is told entirely in text. Each bit of story comes a little at a time, and you’ll need to select your character’s next line each time. Since you pretty much have to say it all anyway, this gets a little annoying at times – but it is a plus for young players, as they can take all the time they need on each line. The story itself is pretty standard for the hidden object adventure genre – spooky, but not too spooky, and entertaining enough but also a bit predictable.

When you aren’t selecting lines from a text tree, you’ll be playing out your duties in a point and click adventure style. Rather than straight hidden object jumbles, the game play in Paranormal Hotel has you examining the environment to find objects that have been mentioned by other characters, or that are somehow out of place. Once you’ve found an object that can be interacted with, your next step is to figure out how and where to use it. That can be challenging at times, as the solutions are not always immediately evident, but if you do get stuck, there is a rechargeable hint system that can be used to point you in the right direction.

In addition to finding objects around (and under) the hotel, there are a number of mini games peppered throughout the environments in Paranormal Hotel. These, again, are pretty standard for the genre. You may find yourself working your way through a maze, or puzzling your way to the right configuration of switches. If that sounds like more of an annoyance than entertainment to you, you can skip these mini games entirely (although you will have to wait for the timer to fill first).
