Inspired by the novel written by Janette Oke

When Calls the Heart is a sweeping saga covering the trials and tribulations of a young schoolteacher named Elizabeth Thatcher. After giving up her opulent life in the city for her first teaching post in a remote mining town named Coal Valley, Elizabeth must learn a lot about life – and herself – if she wants to make a go of it in the West. Though she has much to learn, Elizabeth has intelligence and a good heart that soon wins over the hardened townspeople in Coal Valley. After much uncertainty, she also wins over the heart of a certain handsome mountie named Jack.

Though things are finally looking solid for Jack and Elizabeth’s relationship, Trials of the Heart has a few wrenches to throw into the works that might have the two of them considering whether their relationship is really what is best for both of them. The town of Coal Valley is rejoicing, because the widows of the many miners lost in a cave-in are finally getting their day in the court. Though many wonder whether justice could ever actually be served when the mining company has their hands in so many pockets, just knowing that they’ll have their chance to prove negligence is enough for now. Of course, when they find out that the prosecutor sent to work on their case is much different than they expected, doubts begin to surface.

At the same time, Elizabeth is dealing with the shocking news that her mother is unwell. She immediately books passage to her hometown, and Jack insists on coming along to see her there safely, as well as to check in on his younger brother. Though the two are strong in their love when they arrive in town, seeing just how far apart they are socially is difficult for Jack, especially when Elizabeth’s father suggests to him that she would be far better off with an affluent friend from her childhood. Jack also has to deal with finding out that his incorrigible younger brother has been getting into all sorts of trouble around town. It’s safe to say that Jack’s trip to Hamilton is not all that he expected, and Elizabeth has a lot to deal with as well, given the state of hear mother’s heart and the pressure to stay from her family.

Trials of the Heart stays in keeping with the rest of the When Calls the Heart series, providing a romantic look at life in the West, family friendly romance, humor, and a story that encompasses a whole town. It’s appropriate for the whole family, and is especially nice for viewers who enjoy a bit of history, as the series tries hard to keep things accurate. When Calls the Heart: Trials of the Heart is a perfect choice for Janette Oke fans, and anyone who enjoys a good romance – though, like the other films in the series, it will leave you guessing.
