The heartwarming tale inspired by the stories of Janette Oke continues…
The When Calls the Heart series features the daily toils and troubles of young Elizabeth Thatcher. Raised by a wealthy family in the city, Elizabeth felt called to be a teacher. But when she was assigned to a rough mining town on the untamed prairie, she soon realized how very little her pampered upbringing had prepared her for life on the frontier. As she muddles her way through and begins to gain confidence in both herself and her teaching abilities, Elizabeth soon finds herself welcomed by the kind people of Coal Valley – and exasperated by their handsome new Constable Jack.
In Second Chances, Elizabeth and Jack are just beginning to work their way through the hard feelings left after Elizabeth was duped by a con man. Both are proud people, and it has become almost a habit to argue with each other over everything. As Jack slowly begins to realize that he is pushing away the very thing he wants most, the couple works hard to find some middle ground and become friends. At the same time, Elizabeth is working night and day to find a way to help one of her students, a young man who simply cannot learn how to read. Though his father is in favor of the boy quitting school and going to work in the mines, Elizabeth is convinced that she can find a way to break through and get him reading.
Abigail, the kind widow that Elizabeth lives with, is also facing many changes in her day to day life. Since the loss of her husband in a terrible mine accident, the determined widow has worked hard to make things better in Coal Valley – for the children, the other widows, and anyone who needs her help. But now it’s time for Abigail to find a new purpose for herself as well. But with that purpose comes much change, and the necessity that she move on from the home she shared with her late son and husband. The risk is high, and times are hard – Abigail must look inside herself to find out what her true purpose is.
When Calls the Heart: Second Chances is a feel good film that the whole family can enjoy together. It offers an engaging look into life in times long past, and it does a great job of really making the viewers care for the people in Coal Valley. From the father who comes home to his family a changed man, to the plucky widow who helps everyone but herself, to the stubborn Jack and Elizabeth who just can’t seem to find their way together, you’ll fall in love with the people of Coal Valley.
