An action packed film that immerses you in the world of Heavenly Sword.

Not so much?

Doesn't always strike a perfect note in the story adaptation, and notably differs from the game's story line.

“The prophesies speak of a savior…”

Young Nariko has lived her entire life knowing she is nothing but a disappointment. A “Chosen One” was prophesied, one who could hold the cursed Heavenly Sword and use it to save their people. But when Nariko, the child who was supposed to be the one to save them all was born, she had one fatal flaw – she was female. And so, Nariko has lived in the sahdows of her clan, not allowed to train with the warriors, and constantly reminded that she has failed everyone, simply because she was not born male.

Nariko’s clan has long been responsible for guarding the Heavenly Sword. It was once a tool sent form the heavens to be used for good, but after its heavenly warrior vanished, it soon became a tool for murder. Though many sought to hold it, and used it for their own evil gains, all who wielded it soon fell to its curse. But the prophesies declared that one would be born who could wield it and use it defeat the vile Bohan – and evil king who seeks to rule the world. When Bohan cruelly attacks her village, Nariko sets out on a quest for vengeance, toting the sword along with her.

Will she succeed in finding the one who is meant to wield the sword? Can she survive on her own, fighting both those who seek to kill her, and a sword who seeks to overtake her? Who will betray her next? This is a film that is loaded with questions, and don’t assume that if you’ve played the game, you’ll know what’s happening next. While you’ll recognize the main characters – both good and bad – much has been changed in this film adaptation of the popular game by the same name. And though that may mean disappointment for some, it also makes for an unpredictable story that does keep you guessing till the end.

So, can you watch the film and follow along easily, even if you’ve never played the game? Definitely. The vibrant colors and dark tone make it an easily watchable film, and one even the younger gamers in your family will enjoy (although not too young, as there is plenty of violence to be had). There are a few somewhat unnecessary story paths that seem to deviate a bit from the overall story of Nariko and her strength, but for the most part it’s an enjoyable watch that doesn’t require too much thought.

Heavenly Sword is an entertaining dive into the world of a favorite video game. It does a nice job of immersing viewers into Nariko’s story, and making them care about both her and her companions. Although it doesn’t always strike a perfect note in the way the story has been adapted, it makes for an entertaining film that is fun to watch.
