“Truth and Deception in the life of James “The Amazing” Randi”

For those unfamiliar with the name, James Randi is a world famous magician, particularly skilled in the art of escape. Though he himself was skilled in mentalism, sleight of hand, and many other tricks of the trade, he couldn’t stand the thought of others using these skills for anything other than entertainment. And so, he spent a good portion of his life exposing fraud in some pretty unique ways. From faith healing charlatans to spoon bending psychics, Randi set out to expose their lies to the world – and quite successfully did so.

An Honest Liar is a truly gripping documentary that follows those exposes, a number of The Amazing Randi’s magician performances, and a lot of details about his life, past and present. James Randi has led a very interesting life, and the film portrays that masterfully with a combination of personal interviews and video clips of past performances and appearances. Whether you knew of Randi before the film or not, by the end you’ll definitely be pulling for him – just as he was pulling for the world to get an honest look at the paranormal experience.

Throughout his career, Randi worked with a number of fascinating people, including other magicians willing to use their talents to help expose fraud. An Honest Liar features interviews with these comrades in arms, as they discuss the steps they took to expose a cheating faith healer, trick a group of somewhat biased scientists studying the paranormal, and duplicate the tricks of a spoon bending psychic. Though it’s safe to say he made a lot of enemies with these plans, Randi nonetheless exposed the truth for those who were willing to accept it.

Along with these fellow conspirators, the film interviews a number of well known facing. From discussions of Randi’s work by Mythbuster Adam Savage, to discussions of his impact on the world of magic by Penn Jillette, it is easy to see how much impact one man truly had on the world. There are even interviews with Alice Cooper, who used Randi’s considerable talents in his eerily realistic stage effects. And of course, there are many interviews with The Amazing Randi himself, who allows viewers into his world fully – even when things take an unexpected turn. Through it all, James Randi holds onto his quirky sense of humor, and his dedication to the truth.

From exposing the world’s charlatans, to wowing audiences with his masterful escape acts, to defiantly coming out to the world at the age of 81, James “The Amazing” Randi is a truly fascinating individual. He has led a full and unique life, and An Honest Liar does a great job capturing both who he is as a person, and what he has done as an entertainer. It’s a must watch for both Randi fans, and anyone who loves a really well done documentary.
