Easy to Watch
Jesse's Girl

Not so much?

Lacks a lot of depth

Final Fiendish Findings?

Obviously, if you are a big Rick Springfield fan, this movie is probably up your alley. If you are that big of a fan, though, there’s a decent chance you are in this movie. For myself, I found the movie to be a decent and easy watch that lacked anything truly compelling.

While An Affair of the Heart, is essentially, about Rick Springfield, if you are going into it expecting a rockumentary on the backstory of Jesse’s Girl, you are going to be sorely disappointed. An Affair of the Heart is more about Rick’s relationship with his dedicated fanbase.

There is a whole sub-genre of documentaries geared towards musicians or celebrities and their interactions with their fans. As far as celeb/fan movies go, though, this one is pretty tame. While Rick’s fans are tenacious and dedicated to a level most of us couldn’t comprehend getting to, they don’t appear to be super psychotic like the ones portrayed in some other similar movies. This movie does appear to be a bit different than a lot as it gives some of the stories from Rick’s perspective as well. He appears to be very appreciative and committed to his fanbase, which is great to see from any artist.

The story is told by Rick, his fans, and fellow celebs interview style, as well as actual live footage of various concerts and interactions with fans. Many of the fans discussed how his music got them through tough parts of their lives. Some are people you wouldn’t think would be a typical Rick Springfield fan, like the minister who says Rick’s music helped her come to terms with a gang raping she went through. It did appear that a lot of their stories seemed to have a religious element to it, but that may have just been coincidence as there never really seemed to be a real religious message to the  film. A lot of the stories were really heartfelt, and you could empathize with what they had gone through. You do feel happy that these people were able to find something to help them through the dark times in their life.

One aspect of An Affair of the Heart that I found interesting was to see the effect that his relentless fandom has on those fans’ loved ones. For instance, husbands who feel like they take a backseat to their wives’ adoration or even obsession with Rick. Unfortunately, it didn’t really take that story very deep, though, as it really only played a small part of the movie as a whole. I think I would have liked it more myself to see a deeper story focused on this aspect.

Overall, An Affair of the Heart is a decent take on the celebrity/super fan relationship and how they deal with it. It does feel a bit soft, though, never really digging into some of the issues and strains that unusual relationship causes. Even some of the trials in Rick’s life which he has gone through are really just touched on; the film never really digs into it. Obviously, if you are a big Rick Springfield fan, this movie is probably up your alley. If you are that big of a fan, though, there’s a decent chance you are in this movie. For myself, I found the movie to be a decent and easy watch that lacked anything truly compelling.
