Takes you from comfortable headphones to rocking speakers in a single motion.

Not so Much?

The sound isn't as clear in headphone mode, although it still provides a great listening experience for the price.

We’ve all been there; you’re jamming to your favorite beats solo, just enjoying the music and lost in your own world – and then, you run into some buddies unexpectedly, and it’s either take off your headphones (and your tunes) or ignore your friends. Sharing the music is the ideal outcome, of course, but headphones just aren’t made for a crowd…well, most headphones anyway. The new Flips Audio headphones aim to take you from “solo 2 social” in a single move, and there’s no need for bulky extra equipment or planning ahead. When your gear can go from headphones to speakers in a single easy move, it’s easy to share the love.

At first glance, Flips Audio headphones look pretty standard, but they do have some nice extra touches that make it even easier to take them along wherever you go. As you open the box, you’ll find the headphones nestled inside their own hard sided carrying case, complete with a carabiner clip for easy hookup to a backpack, purse, or belt loop. The headphones themselves fold up to tuck neatly into the egg-shaped case, with hinges above each ear cup allowing them to fold into themselves.

Convenience is important, but when it comes to headphones comfort is king. After all, you can’t truly enjoy them if your ears feel like they’re being squished to a pulp. And for many of us, style is an important factor as well – the best headphones look good *and* feel good. In the style department, Flips go for a sleek minimalistic look that should fit easily into any lifestyle. They feature a matte black finish covering the entire piece, save for a lime green and gray logo centered on each earpiece. The earpieces are in a dark gray color that blends nicely with the overall look.

In order to maximize comfort even over long listening sessions, the earpieces are lined in the super soft memory foam that also coats the top of the headband. This, combined with the soft leather feel surface makes for a supremely comfortable fit that is snug without squishing. The headband is about the right length for the average teenager (younger audiophiles may find them a bit large), and can be extended over an inch on each side. Those who like an overly long cord may be a bit disappointed, but it’s sized perfectly for on the go with enough length for a little wiggle room without too much extra cord flopping around and catching on things.

The sound aspect of the Flips Audio headphones is the most interesting part. In a truly innovative design, they’ve created a set of headphones that can convert to a pair of external speakers, simply by flipping the earpieces outward (hence the name). Your ears are safe from accidental speaker mode, as the sound only switches on when the ear pieces have been completely flipped out. When in speaker mode, the Flips use an internal battery that is easily charged via the included usb cable. The battery life is pretty respectable, clocking in at up to around eight hours depending on usage.

The sound quality when in speaker mode is actually surprisingly good. They won’t blow out any windows with volume or anything, but it’s respectably loud at peak volume, enough to fill a small room with sound. The sound quality, which I expected to suffer while on speaker mode, is surprisingly deep and clear, giving proper depth to everything from the blues to dubstep. If anything, the sound quality on the speakers is actually a bit better than on headphone mode, although both perform at acceptable levels.

Flips Audio headphones deliver on their promise to take wearers from solo to social without missing a beat. Though the sound comes off a little flat when in headphone mode, overall they provide depth and clarity to a variety of genres of music, particularly for their price range. A built-in rechargeable battery makes charging the speakers a painless task, providing hours of sound on a single charge, making it easy to turn a solo excursion into a group party in a single motion. And for those times when only solo will do, the generously padded earpieces mean you won’t end up with throbbing ears from hours of blissful listening. Whether you’re looking to downsize your pile of tech, or just want to stay budget friendly by keeping your purchases down, Flips Audio headphones give great sound – alone or in a group – in one handy portable device.
