Full Fiendish Findings...

Chances are you’ve seen the YouTube video; a young man, seemingly too young to worry too much about things like mortality, the afterlife, or anything else beyond girls and sports, wordlessly holds up index cards that tell the story of his life, one heartbreaking card at a time. He is Ben Breedlove, a teenager who touched millions of people in his final days on Earth with one simple video that took the world by storm.

When Will The Heaven Begin? is Ben Breedlove’s story as told by his older sister, Ally Breedlove. From his early days, when his parents were told of his incurable heart condition, Ben was a force to be reckoned with. Despite the many limitations his condition placed upon him, Ben wasn’t one to hold back in life, and his exuberant spirit never failed to touch those around him, leaving his friends and family richer just for having known him. Though his family suffered many near misses throughout his short life, Ben lived to see his senior year in high school. When a near death experience gave him a new outlook on heaven and the afterlife, he shared those experiences poignantly in that video, and in so doing, captivated the world.

As his sister, Ally has a unique perspective on Ben’s life, and her love and admiration shine through each and every page. She also brings a lot of back story about Ben, giving readers a really well rounded look at the man behind the video. It tells the story of Ben, from his birth to his premature death. Also included are a series of photos from Ben’s life, which serve well to give readers a personal connection to him and his family, which lets his ultimate message of love and redemption really shine through.

Although the story itself is quite inspiring on many different levels, I did feel it suffered some what from its meandering style. The story takes a mostly chronological approach, but often cuts back or forward to different moments in Ben’s life, which can make it a little more difficult to actually follow the story, and how different elements affected his outlook on life. It’s a minor issue, but one worth mentioning.

Whatever your outlook on this life and the next, Ben Breedlove’s story is an interesting and inspiring one. As someone who literally grew up with death hanging over his head, he offers a completely different outlook on what really matters. His story, as told by his sister, is one that will surely stay with you long after the last page is turned.
