Watch_Dogs, the recently released open world adventure from Ubisoft, is a hacker’s dream featuring a charismatic lead character named Aiden Pearce. Both traumatized and spurred to action by the death of his young niece, Aiden decides to form his own brand of justice. The story in Watch_Dogs centers on a far reaching surveillance system called ctOs, which watches over all of the city of Chicago, ostensibly for the good of the people, creating safety and security at the expense of a little freedom (who needs it, right?). Of course, that sort of power tends to lead to corruption, and hackers like Aiden are a key part of that – on both sides.
The Art of Watch_Dogs is a veritable treasure trove of art from the game. From sketches and concept art to the impressive final pieces, it is a must have for devoted fans of the game. With comments from the artists themselves coupled with information and inspirations for every aspect of the game, it provides an in depth look at “the look” of Watch_Dogs. The book is divided into four different sections, each of which offers a variety of full color artwork from the game. Chapter 01, entitled Dramatis Personae, covers all the major players in the game, beginning, of course, with Aiden Pearce. While a great deal of attention is given to Pearce and his look, other characters get a nice overview as well. Whether you’ve already played and loved the game an are looking for some more insight into the characters, or are checking out the book first, you are sure to find little tidbits of information that surprise at each turn of the page.
Ensuing chapters focus on “The Living City”, “The Underground”, and “Everything is Connected”, giving readers a greater look at this newly imagined city of Chicago. By using a blend of real life iconic structures and areas from Chicago, combined with reimagined settings that enhance the story and give the open world game a veritable playground for gamers to explore, the developers have created a unique blend that really helps immerse gamers into the story – and this is due in no small part to the quality of the artwork in the game, which is highlighted at its finest in the pages of The Art of Watch_Dogs.
With vibrant colors, gritty cityscapes, an impressive level of realism, and tons of little tidbits about the making of the game, this is a book with a lot to offer. The fact that it is printed on high quality paper and bound into a nicely sized hardcover means that The Art of Watch_Dogs will be a book that can grace your coffee table of bookshelf for years to come.
