Not so much?

It's certainly a book aimed at a niche market, and not necessarily something the average reader would really get lost in.

“Whether you’re young or old, new to the hobby or a hardcore gamer, this book will introduce you to or remind you of some of the greatest, most historically important games ever made.”

1977 to 1987 – those were truly the golden years of gaming, marked by so much innovation, and so much love for the emerging hobby that evolved into the gaming culture we all know and love. Whether you were still in diapers (or not even born yet) during that decade of gaming history, or you were right there begging your parents for the newest releases, the games that were created in that time period are some of the most memorable, the most influential, video games that shaped the future of gaming as we know it.

The top list has long been a staple for a quick article sure to stir up some great debates. At any given time, you can easily find dozens of top five, top ten, and yes, even top one hundred lists on gaming blogs all over the internet. Generally, though, these lists are pretty brief, providing only the most basic information about each game and why it was chosen. They serve well as quick entertainment, but do little to provide actual knowledge for those looking to find out more about their favorite retro games. In The 100 Greatest Console Video Games, you’ll find a comprehensive volume filled with cool gaming facts, tons of nostalgia, and some truly unique video games.

The book examines one hundred different titles that were released between 1977 and 1987 on a variety of different consoles, and it gives each game its own place in the spotlight. Each and every one of the games in the book is given a full writeup (typically two pages) including descriptions of the games themselves, interesting facts about its production, and of course, why it made the list. There are even pictures of cover art and a current price guide for those of us still hanging on to our old collections.

The book itself is a sturdy hardcover volume printed on a nice quality paper that should stand up well to the test of time. The black cover is graced with a photo of the iconic nintendo cartridge, with thumbnails of retro game cover art behind it, making for a great look to grace your coffee table or book shelf in style. Though it’s definitely not a book that will appeal to everyone, given it’s rather specific subject matter, The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 is a great fit for the retro game enthusiast in your life, or any young gamer interested in the roots of his or her hobby.
