Spider and Stone by Jaleigh Johnson takes readers far below the surface to the ancient dwarven city of Iltkazar, where a frenzied search for an ancient magical artifact precipitates a ferocious battle that could mean the life or death of an entire people – all at the whim of the treacherous spider queen.

Spider and Stone is a part of the Rise of the Underdark storyline in all sorts of Dungeons & Dragons merchandise, from cards to board games to books. It follows the designs of the Spider Queen Lolth as she and her loyal drow seek to rise from the Underdark and conquer the surface world. As part of her plan, she has instructed her people to collect the magical Arcane Script Sphere, a powerful object blessed by Mystra – the goddess of magic. While Mystra has long been dead, her magic lives on in the Arcane Script Sphere, and it calls out to be found.

Spider and Stone takes place primarily in the dwarven city of Iltkazar, an ancient city buried far beneath the surface world that has fallen far from its formidable heyday. The dwarven people have fallen both in numbers and spirit, and their king has returned to them a shell of his former self. But with the treacherous drow attacking the passages to their city almost daily in their quest for the Ancient Script Sphere, the dwarves must pull together as a people or face annihilation.

While Spider and Stone is easily picked up and read as a first novel in the story line, it is a sequel to Mistshore, and picks up where Mistshore left off in its tale of Icelin, Ruen, and Sull. Icelin and Ruen are greatly spell scarred, and they also seek the Arcane Script Sphere – but with hopes of healing rather than destruction. Icelin’s spell scar is slowly killing her, and ancient magic could be the key. Ruen, a loner and a fighter, and Sull, a kindly butcher turned protector, serve as travel companions, bodyguards, surrogate family – and perhaps even more – to the fierce yet delicate Icelin.

Author Jaleigh Johnson does a phenomenal job with the character development in Spider and Stone. From the cruel Fizzri to the overwhelmingly kind Icelin to the enigmatic Zollgarza, each and every character in the book draws you into their story and makes you feel as if you are right there. At the same time, even to readers who are familiar with the devious machanations of Lolth or the familial bon between Icelin, Sull, and Ruen, will still be completely surprised by the many twists and turns in this tale. It is quite simply a wonderful story, perfectly told.

Spider and Stone will be released on November 6th, 2012, and can currently be pre-ordered for $6.79.
