Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover Volume 1: Precious Little Life is one for the collectors, but can it stand up to the competition?

I was a little disappointed after reading this graphic novel, but I think it was mainly due to the fact that I had seen the movie first. Throughout this review, I found myself referring back to the movie automatically as opposed to the comic, which is always an issue with book/movie tie-ins.

For those of you who’ve experienced neither, let me give you an overview of the story. Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life is about a 23yr old Canadian bassist in a band called Sex Bob-Bomb. Scott’s slightly nerdy, and his parents are in Europe. He’s between jobs right now, and lives with his gay roommate in a small apartment across the road from his old family home. A year after his break up with his ex-girlfriend, Scott meets a teenage Asian catholic girl called Knives Chau.

Scott finds this new relationship easy and simple. That is, until the a girl of his dreams (literally) shows up and things change. No, he doesn’t straighten up, go out and get a job, and get all married and respectable. Things just get complicated. Scott somehow has to break up with Knives (who’s now obsessed with Scott and his band). As if that isn’t enough, he’s go to defeat the Seven Deadly Exes of his new girlfriend, Ramona Flowers, if he wants to have any hope of being with her long enough to have his happily ever after.

What I liked about Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover Volume 1: Precious Little Life was the simplicity of the artwork.  I also enjoyed seeing the actual piece artwork of the comic that they included in the film. There are a lot of extras included in this volume, like where Brian lee O’Malley is explaining how he came up with Scott Pilgrim and the other characters, and how they looked, and sometimes the hidden symbolism they contain.

Now here’s the hard part. What I liked about Scott Pilgrim the film was how much it was set out like a comic, and how many video game references were in there, and how fast paced and different it was from any other movie I’d seen. As it turns out, the film follows the comic almost word for word, page for page, image for image, so the only thing new to me by reading the comic was the very small and irrelevant bits that the movie just didn’t need. The movie shows the full story of Scott Pilgrim and his fights with all seven of the Deadly exes. That might be an issue for people hoping for something new from this volume.

However, the little insignificant pieces in the comic do give the characters more depth. And there wouldn’t be a series of Scott Pilgrim comics if all the deadly exes were included in the one book.  I would definitely like to read the rest of the series, just to see if the movie does justice to the remaining deadly exes. I can’t help but think if I had read this comic before seeing the film, it probably would’ve blown my mind and I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more.

Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover Volume 1: Precious Little Life is a definite read for graphic novel fans, and for Scott Pilgrim junkies. Although I personally enjoyed the film more than the graphic novel, that was likely due to the inevitable comparisons made from already knowing the story. Whether you prefer your stories on the screen or on a page, Scott Pilgrim is a great tale.
