You really don’t know Jack.

“Mr. Jack Maguire, this is a most impossible situation. More is required of you than should be asked of anyone. Stay the course and you will never hear from us again. Don’t quit. Don’t give up. For all our sakes.” And so begins Nowhere Man. As we are introduced to Officer Jack Maguire, a driven police officer who has more than a few things to prove to everyone and himself, we are in turns both intrigued and confused about who…and what…he is.

Jack is a large, muscular man with a smooth style, a piercing gaze, and an absolute drive to excel that supersedes his requirements to follow orders and protocol. His accomplished partner Rose struggles to keep him in line both on and off the job, but Jack has his eye so focused on a coveted prize that he simply cannot let go. His is a complicated story, with so much more simmering below the surface.

You Don’t Know Jack is the first volume in a graphic novel series by Jerome Walford. As it is the first issue, we are introduced to a variety of characters in Jack’s life for the first time. On one hand, who they are and how they interact and connect with Jack is a major driver to Jack’s story. On the other hand, it is an awful lot to take in at once, and as such readers are left with more questions than answers when they finish Volume One.

While that would be a definite negative in most cases, Nowhere Man is a psychological thriller that is meant to keep you guessing – and it does exactly that. Each little teaser you are given about things like the extent of Jack’s unusual abilities (and the “accident” that led to them), his position on the police force, and how his relationship to his now gone father will influence his actions has readers diving deep into the psyche of Jack Maguire.
