“We’re all the same color in the dark and just as vulnerable”

The action packed story of cryptic hero Jack Maguire continues with “Jacked Up”, a volume that introduces far more questions than it answers. For those unfamiliar with the series, Jack Maguire is a hotshot police detective who isn’t always one to follow all the rules. Add in a chip on his shoulder and some…special abilities, and you have the recipe for a whole lot of trouble.

Six months have passed since we last saw Jack and his partner (in more ways than one). As Jack lays in a hospital bed, deeply in a coma, Rose is the one left holding the reins. She is the only one who knows what really happened the night Jack got hurt, and not everyone is buying the story she’s telling. Though Rose has known of Jack’s abilities for a while, she now questions whether much of what she knew of him was a lie – including their relationship.

As Jack lies unconscious and Rose struggles, other forces are at work – and they are determined to erase any evidence that the mysterious device Jack possesses ever existed. Exactly who they are – and when and where they’ve come from – is unclear, but it certainly doesn’t look good for Jack. If and when he awakens, he’ll have more than just Internal Affairs to deal with – that’s for sure.

Nowhere Man: Jacked Up offers up more of the action and mystery we’ve come to expect from the Nowhere Man series. The captivating main character, Jack, is equal parts cryptic rebel and ass-kicking hero – which makes for some truly interesting story lines.  Jack wrestles with just about everything, from his feelings for his long gone father, to his role as a cop. His relationship with Rose, while oftentimes his only true connection, is muddled both by her prominent family and Jack’s refusal to tell her the whole truth about what is going on in his life.

The story line aside, Nowhere Man is worth a second look for the artwork alone. Each panel is meticulously drawn, featuring gritty, realistic characters that draw you into their struggles with a single glance. While the story will keep you guessing (and anxiously awaiting the next installment), the artwork will keep you coming back again and again. Jack Maguire is a character that’s hard to resist.
