Veteran game designer Scott Rogers offers up a how-to book of game design that covers everything you need to know to create a great game.

Whether you’re a complete noob when it comes to video game design, or you’ve been in the business a while and want to get some fresh new perspectives on how to get things done, Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Design has a lot to offer in terms of practical advice – from the perspective of both a game designer who’s been there, and a guy who truly loves to play video games. After all, you aren’t creating a game for the other designers – it’s the players who really decide what makes a game great, and you need to design your game accordingly.

Now, if you’re anything like me, when you see a title like Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Design 2nd Edition, you immediately come to the conclusion that no matter how valuable the information included within the pages may be, it’s going to be as dull as dirt to read, textbook-like even. I couldn’t be more happy to report that that is far from the case with Scott Rogers’ book. Written in a humor filled casual style, it feel right from the start as though the author is right there with you, giving out valuable tips and personal observations gleaned from years in the business. Even better, he’s doing so in a conversational style that is quite engaging and easy to read. Bonus!

Right from the start, you’ll see that Level Up! is a book designed with gamers in mind. The chapters are listed as levels (with a few bonus levels at the end for the overachievers), and there are tons of illustrations that serve both to illustrate points made and to give your eyes a break from what would otherwise by walls of text. The author explains early in the book that he found that using comics to illustrate his documents made people much more likely to read them – and he seems to have a point there, as Level Up! is a book that is easy to read.

However easy to read it may be, the true value in this book is the information gathered from years of experience that Scott Rogers willingly shares with his readers. From the basics like writing the story and working through all the necessary paperwork to get your game started, to the nuts and bolts of game design like mechanics, camera, and controls, Level Up! takes you from pitching your ideas to multiplayer and monetization, with easy how to guides and explanations that breaks the process of designing a game into small pieces that are easy to understand (if not necessarily to implement).

Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Design 2nd Edition is a must have for aspiring game designers, and has tons of practical advice to offer even to experienced designers. With an engaging conversational style and tons of illustrations, this is a textbook of game design that you’ll actually enjoy reading.
