Harry Dresden is back – and once again, the fate of Chicago lies in his hands.
For those unfamiliar with the series, The Dresden Files are a series featuring a charming and relatable character named Harry Dresden. Harry is a wizard, making a living on the mean streets of Chicago as a wizard for hire – and he gets a lot more business than you’d expect. In previous books, Harry has gotten himself in and out of a lot of trouble, the results being that he is currently in charge of apprenticing a powerful young wizard who isn’t exactly used to bending to authority. On top of that, a war between the vampires and wizards has made Chicago a particularly unfriendly place to be. Though the previous books add a lot of detail and backstory, you can just pick up this book and enjoy it without reading any of the others (although you’ll likely be hooked by the end and seek out the others anyway).
As the story begins, Harry and his apprentice are working on helping her harness her power using psychokinesis. Though they’ve tangled in the past, Harry’s apprentice is finally settling in and really working at learning the tricks of the trade. Unfortunately, she’s going to need those tricks far sooner than either of them expected. An incredibly powerful creature is killing shop owners in the city, and even Harry seems powerless against it. Though the creature continues to kill, Harry has captured a part of it to study in the hopes that figuring out what it is will help him find a way to defeat. But as Harry and an unusual friend go out searching for answers, his apprentice is left alone to face a deadly foe. Will they figure out the mystery of who is behind all of the killing before it’s too late?
The Dresden Files are a great series that blend supernatural action and thrills with a great sense of humor. Whether you’ve read books in the series before, or this is your first taste of Harry Dresden, you’re sure to hooked by the end of this engrossing graphic novel, Downtown.
