An engaging story line and likable characters make for an easy read.

Not so much?

It can seem a bit shallow at times, although that could be a product of it being intended for a young adult audience.

“Jex Malone was born to be nosy.”

Jessica Malone is about to have the worst summer of her young life. The seventeen year old is being forced by the court to spend an entire summer at the home of her estranged father. Jex, as she goes by, is unimpressed – and is even more so when she arrives at his home in Las Vegas to be greeted by Strawberry Shortcake bedding and a pullout couch. Yep – it’s going to be an awful summer, and Jex cannot wait to get back to New Jersey (although she isn’t going to turn down a few Pop Tarts while she’s here).

As hard as it is living with a father she barely knows, Jex soon finds out that things aren’t all bad in Las Vegas. She quickly meets three girls her age, and all of them live in her neighborhood. There’s studious Nat, who loves baggy sweatshirts and is hooked on criminal investigation. There’s gorgeous Deva, who is incredibly rich and not all that restrained. And there’s timid Cissy, who seems quiet and a bit cowardly at first but soon shows she has a core of strength.

The girls quickly bond over a cold missing persons case that just so happens to have been the impetus of Jex’s parents’ divorce. Jex’s father is a skilled detective who just couldn’t solve the case, no matter how obsessed he became. When the girls find the old case files, they soon decide that they should be the ones to find out exactly what happened to Patty Matthews all those years ago. After all, she disappeared right around the corner from them, and most of the main players are still around.

And so begins the Drew-Ids, a secret girl detective group that is absolutely determined to solve the case, no matter what it takes. The girls pore through old case files, investigate the people and places that Patty frequented, and generally just sleuth and snoop until they find clues – and all of this in secret, as Detective Malone has no idea they have found his files. It makes for some interesting situations, and a fair amount of danger as well. Mixed in with that is the growing and often stilted relationship between Jex and her father, as both of them struggle to find out how they fit together – and if theirs is a relationship that can be saved.
