A fun, interactive tale that kids will enjoy.

Not so much?

Story is not all that unique.

Final Fiendish Findings?

Froggy Friends is a classic tale of learning to love who you are. With engaging characters and a feel good message, it’s a story that young kids will enjoy. With the unique characteristic of uncolored pages hidden throughout the book, it’s also a great interactive activity that will really help kids feel like they are part of the story.

Oh, to be a frog! Hopping along on lily pads, noshing on tasty crickets – what a life! But life isn’t all perfect even for frogs, as two green buddies find out in Froggy Friends by Kevin Levy.

The grass is always greener on the other side – it’s a phrase that is often repeated, but it’s difficult for young kids to truly grasp its meaning. Froggy Friends lays it all out for them with a tale of two friends who are happy enough, but feel like things would be even better if they could be just like their friends. Little Jimmy and Big Max are two frogs that live in a wonderful, happy forest filled with fairies. They lead an idyllic life of dancing, fun, and good food. But when the two friends happen across a genie who offers them three wishes, they both decide they would be happier if they were the other.

As soon as they make their wishes, Little Jimmy is transferred into Big Max’s body, and vice versa. But rather than finding that life is now finally perfect, both little frog soon realize that they were happier as themselves. The end of the short tale finds both friends wishing to be themselves again, finally happy with their lots in life. It’s a great moral that even the youngest kids can understand, and it’s illustrated in a classic yet colorful style that brings to mind the stories of my childhood.

While it’s a cute story with eye catching illustrations, at first glance there really isn’t anything to set it apart from the thousands of other books out there for kids. On closer examination, you’ll find the fun little quirk that my daughters immediately fell in love with: some of the pages have been left uncolored. It is a standard sized, bound book, that hides interactive coloring pages for kids to make the story their own. As my seven year old pointed out, since some of the pages are colored, it gives you ideas for how you want to color the others (and makes it interesting to look at until you’ve colored the whole thing). Both of my girls really enjoyed the story, citing the genie as their favorite part, and really look forward to coloring the book and making it their own.
