It’s tough on a kid when your best friend moves away.

Sheldon and his faithful dog Jet are having a rough day. Sheldon’s best friend is moving away. Sheldon’s not sure where he’s moving to, but the moving van says  “Jupiter” on it, so he thinks it’s a pretty safe bet that it’s in outer space. Sheldon isn’t one to abandon a buddy, so he decides that he and Jet will construct a rocket and go visit his friend in space. Of course, resources are scarce for kids, so Sheldon’s rocket isn’t exactly top notch material. As he and Jet blast off into space, an equipment malfunction cuts their epic voyage short. But with a little help from a new friend, Sheldon and Jet just might reach space after all.

Faraway Friends is a fun book about friendship, loyalty, and a whole lot of imagination. Though it’s obvious that Sheldon and Jet’s voyage to space is only in their imaginations, it shows kids how fun it can be to be creative and make your own fun. And though Sheldon is devoted to his old friend, he learns that finding a new friend can be as simple as finding a common interest. It’s a fun book that my kids really loved, due in no small part to the great illustrations that fill every page. From the backyard to their trip to space, Sheldon and Jet are colorful and interesting, pulling kids right into the story.

The book itself is a sturdy hardcover that should hold up nicely to many bedtime reads. In a very kid friendly touch, the book cover has glow in the dark letters making up the title. Of course, we had to try it out right away, and it gave off a nice spacey glow. You can’t go wrong with the glow in the dark. The wording is appealing to kids, the story has a nice message to it, and the illustrations are very well done, suiting the story perfectly. It’s a great choice for your bedtime adventures.
