Full Fiendish Findings...

Fanny is an adorable little bulldog with generously sized ears. Though she loves her home in the city – and her doting “dad” – Fanny wonders what it would be like to see her mom once more. Fanny was taken to her new home at the age of three months, and she lives a very happy life filled with trips to the beach and naps in the sun.  It’s a dog’s dream, but still she yearns for her first home – but just for a visit.

As Fanny thinks of the love she feels for her mother, and how badly she wishes to see her again, her giant ears very slowly start to lift her off the ground. She soon falls, of course, but after a lot of practice, the love she feels enables Fanny to fly. As she soars through the city of San Francisco, she takes in all the iconic sites of the city. But then she spots something different in the distance. It’s colorful, fun, noisy…it’s the circus! What circus could resist a flying bulldog? Fanny soon becomes part of the act, soaring through the various circus act in a colorful centerfold page that is sure to delight young eyes.

Even the lure of the circus can’t delay Fanny long from her goal, and she soon sets off once more. In the happy ending kids are waiting for, Fanny finds her mother – and a few surprise family members as well. And while Fanny is so happy to be with her family again, she knows where her true home is. After her reunion, she takes off into the sky again to return to her doting “dad”.

Fanny, the Flying French Bulldog is a whimsical story that is will delight imaginative children. The pages are filled with softly colored illustrations that lend a sort of beauty to the floppy eared dog as she soars through the skies on her journey. For the most part, the book is quite sturdy, with a solid hard cover and quality pages that will stand up to much love and frequent readings. The exception to this is perhaps the circus centerfold towards the middle of the book. The outer pages fold out to reveal a four page scene covered with every circus act you can imagine. It’s quite eye catching, and popular with the young kids I read it with. However, foldout pages like that are easily ripped, so a little caution should be exercised with young readers.

Fanny, the Flying French Bulldog is a great story for young animal lovers, and anyone with a great imagination. As it touches on points on lasting family connections, it also emphasizes the importance of making your own family as well. The wonderfully artistic illustrations are a joy to look at, and the star of the book will keep puppy fanatics coming back again and again.
