Ace Pilot Eddie Rickenbacker and the Dawn of the Age of Speed

Eddie Rickenbacker was a one in a million kind of guy. From his humble beginnings as the child of German immigrants living a hardscrabble existence in an unforgiving environment, he stood up under pressure and made diamonds from coal time after time, refusing to accept that this was all life had to offer to him. As a very poor youngster, he was often teased by other children for things like having to wear mismatched shoes, and his proud father often took out life’s injustices on his young son. From such rough beginnings came a man who would captivate the nation, going down in history as a true hero.

Eddie was hooked on speed after his very first taste, a quick test ride as a teenager on one of the “horseless carriages” that were beginning to take the nation by storm. Never content to sit on the sidelines, he worked his way through every aspect of the automobile industry, from sales to mechanics, to design, and finally, racing. As an automobile racer in the beginnings of the sport, Eddie helped form an industry that is going strong generations later. Racing was far different back then, with none of the protections drivers have now, and Eddie watched many a friend and colleague meet their end on the track. Sadly, it would serve well to prepare him for his life ahead.

From racing the tracks to soaring through the air, Eddie found a new love in airplanes, and soon found himself dedicated to joining the war effort as a pilot. None of his paths in life were easy, and this one was no different, but finally he achieved his goal, joining the fight against the Germans in World War I, and becoming America’s ace of aces, shooting down a record number of enemy planes. Even that wasn’t enough for Eddie though, and his life after the war encompassed a number of entrepreneurial efforts, a plane crash, weeks lost at sea, and more.

Rarely has there been such an interesting life as that of Eddie Rickenbacker, and author John F. Ross does a masterful job of engrossing readers into Eddie’s many trials and tribulations. You’ll hear the details of Eddie’s life, but you’ll also gain a deeper understanding of everything around him, from the beginnings of auto racing, to the first aircraft, to the beginnings of the domestic airlines, all told in an engaging manner that drops you right into Eddie’s story. Enduring Courage is informative, engaging, and simply captivating.
