Arnold Gold has a huge problem, and it’s going to take every bit of smarts he has to pull off the escape of a lifetime.

When we first meet Arnold Gold, he is quite literally running for his life. When he enters his house, takeout pizza in hand, his best friend’s shouted warning gives him just enough time to escape the deadly men who are searching for him. Unfortunately, his friend has no such luck, and the investigation into his murder sets off a chain of events that will leave Arnold with very few choices – and very little chance of getting out of all of it alive. As he realizes how little he has to lose, Arnold finally begins to turn his life around in ways he’s dreamed of for years. But will it all be too little, too late?

The story of how it all came about is told in flashbacks as Arnold tells all to his lawyer. Everything about Arnold’s predicament is a study in how just a few seemingly innocent choices can change the course of your life forever. Though Arnold is your typical computer geek, awkward with people and far more comfortable with software than small talk, he has little choice but to jump in with both feet to avenge his best friend. What is behind all of the intrigue? What could possibly be worth taking lives over? A computer program, masterminded by Arnold, coveted by terrorists, Arnold’s “system” is currently the only thing keeping him alive – and if he wants to stay that way, he’s going to have to outsmart everyone who wants a piece of him, before it’s too late.

Deadly Odds is a fast paced thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Arnold, though at times unlikable, is a completely believable character who slowly begins to redeem himself as his life starts to fall apart. The system that he creates in the book is entirely plausible, and it’s equally plausible how many groups would want to get their hands on it if they learned of its existence. Though the book centers often around matters of technology, it never gets too technical or dry, striking a nice balance between too much information and not enough. Arnold’s interactions with those around him serve well to advance the story, creating tension and the dynamics of Arnold’s relationships.
