Bobby Ether is just your average fourteen year old boy. He loves basketball and food, and he isn’t afraid to stand up for what he wants. But when his love of basketball causes him to perform an unlikely feat, it sets off a chain of events that will change his life – and his view of the world – forever.
When Bobby’s use of “magic” causes a group of secret agents to surround his house and attempt to catch him, a mysterious woman named Cassandra helps him escape – and explains that there really isn’t any such thing as magic, although there are some who are gifted in shaping and using the energy of the world. But Bobby soon realizes that that very talent puts him at risk, and he has no idea who he can really trust.
When he ends up at the Academy – a school somewhat reminiscent of Hogwart’s from the Harry Potter series – Bobby is thrust into a world he knows nothing about. There are all the usual school issues to deal with – making new friends, avoiding bullies, passing algebra – combined with a whole host of new problems to worry about. Bobby must figure out who can be trusted, learn how to unlock his power, and uncover a conspiracy that has world wide reach. It’s a lot to take on for a teenager who just wanted to play a little basketball, but Bobby proves himself up to the challenge.
The story line in Bobby Ether and the Academy is engaging and fun, and just unpredictable enough to keep you guessing without seeming unbelievable. The characters in the book are well fleshed out, giving you a peak inside their personalities that makes everything that much more engaging. Bobby’s studious young friend Jinx offers a nice contrast to Bobby’s more cavalier style, and his group of friends (and enemies) at the Academy provide a host of adventures for Bobby as he uncovers the surprising truth about his family and the true objectives behind the Academy.
Bobby Ether and the Academy is a well written book that is suited to teens and tweens without offering anything in the way of objectionable content, yet it’s a fun light read for adults as well. Bobby is a likable main character who deals well with all the twists and turns life has suddenly thrown at him, which makes for an enjoyable read.
