Fun rhymes and colorful illustrations

Not so much?

Illustrations are small, and rhymes don't always hit the right note.

Final Fiendish Findings?

My Alphabet Adventure is a colorful, rhyming tale of an adventure through the alphabet. Loaded with lots of items that begin with each letter – and some really cute pictures to go along with them – it has all the elements of a favorite book. Unfortunately, the pictures are just a little too small, and the rhymes a little bit off, for it to be as engaging as it could be.

An ABC Picture Book For Toddlers

As you’d expect from the name, My Alphabet Adventure is a book that takes kids on an adventure through the alphabet. Starting with “A” and working its way through to “Z”, the book uses rhyming phrases and colorful (but small) illustrations to teach kids the sounds that each letter makes. It also points out each of the five vowels within the rhymes, giving an unobtrusive little introduction on that concept.

There are tons of picture books out there featuring the alphabet, and with good reasons. Parents today aren’t content to simply read with their children – they want to throw in educational tidbits whenever and wherever they can, in a bid to give their kids a leg up any way they can in today’s competitive world. From toddler language classes to baby yoga, kids are being pushed to do everything younger – and better.

Regardless of the intent behind it, it’s not a strategy that always works. Young kids who are pushed too much will simply push back, or become anxious. It’s important to keep these sorts of education opportunities fun and engaging, making sure that the kids are enjoying them.  My Alphabet Adventure tries to keep things light and engaging with a lighthearted rhyming tone. It does succeed most of the time, although a few of the rhymes come out sounding a bit stilted (and there’s even a misspelling at one point, always a disappointment in an educational book).

The illustrations are also quite fun, featuring all kinds of colorful objects that coincide with the letter being discussed. Astronauts and crocodiles, oranges and suns – the pictures are cute and cheerful, and overall exactly the type of thing that kids of a certain age enjoy. The problem is, they are quite small. The illustrations and text together only cover about half or so of each page, leaving a lot of white space which could have been utilized by making the pictures larger. This is particularly important for the age range this book is meant for (toddlers), as it is the pictures that generally truly hold their attention.
