Erin M. Evans rocks The Sundering with her newest novel, The Adversary.

Featuring her popular character, a young tiefling named Farideh, The Adversary takes readers deep into the mechanitions of the gods as Farideh, her patron Lorcan (and his cunning sister Sairche), and her twin sister Havilar are pulled deep into a scheme that has them scrambling just to stay alive…even as they furiously work to figure out who is pulling the strings.

When last we met Farideh, she was learning to deal with Lorcan, the cambion she has somewhat unwillingly made a pact with. As she struggled to figure out the often underhanded schemes that come with dealings with the Nine Hells, she learned some unexpected truths about the origins that she and her sister possess that make them a very attractive for other demons, and keeps their safety at issue because of it. All of that comes to light when Sairche’s cunning plan puts those she loves at risk.

The Adversary picks up right where Farideh and Havilar off. Unfortunately, the rest of the world has left them behind. Little did Farideh know how very much her decision to deal with Sairche would mean. The one moment has set off a pattern of events that will change their lives, and their world, forever.  As Havilar works to come to terms with the repercussions of her sister’s actions, Farideh is swept off into a mission that has nearly everyone she loves and respects questioning her loyalties. It’s questionable whether they’ll all come out alive, but one thing is certain – Farideh will never be the same.

The Adversary is a masterfully written story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. There is tons of action – both physical and magical – to keep battle junkies happy, but a lot of introspection comes into play as well. Farideh, Havilar, Lorcan, even Sairche…all must examine who they really are, and what their motives have become, if they are to live to see another day. This is book that is never predictable, with loads of twists and turns that you never see coming. Yet it all comes together in a way that makes sense in the end. The Adversary is a truly good read for even complete newcomers to the story, and a must have for long time Forgotten Realms fans.
