An engaging tale that pulls you in right from the start.

Not so much?

Just when you think you have it all figured out, off it goes in another direction.

Final Fiendish Findings?

14 is a book that defines mystery. There is so much to figure out, so much that you won’t understand till the very end, yet it sucks you in and lets you believe you’ve got it all figured out. Author Peter Clines offers up a thrilling tale that will keep you guessing till the very last page.

Full Fiendish Findings...

Nate’s new apartment is just too good to be true.

Nate Tucker has just been handed the best apartment. Sure, it’s small, and there’s no off-street parking, but you just can’t beat the price. Of course, there have been little rumbles right from the start that things are a little off in the Kavach building. Little things, like that one apartment that no one seems to last longer than a month or so before they move out. And there’s the other apartment, the one that is never, ever rented out. Oh, and there’s the apartment next door that appears to not actually have any door. And then there’s the biggest mystery of all: apartment 14. With a door that’s chained shut with a series of padlocked, it’s a mystery that Nate just can’t quite let go of.

14 tells the story, not just of Nate, but of a group of residents in the Kavach building who form a team determined to figure out just what is going on in their building. All of them have lived there long enough to know that’s something just not normal here. But they are also all broke enough to understand that moving out isn’t an option. The rents in the Kavach building are ridiculously low, and that’s just another part of the mystery.

As the neighbors band together to pool their resources and figure things out, they are hampered by the ever present gaze of the manager, who is just as determined to end their search. It all makes for a near constant game of cat and mouse that is one part science fiction, one part steampunk, and a whole lot Scooby Doo. These meddling kids are uncovering the mystery of the century, and the fate of the world depends on what they do with the answers they find.

14 is a really well written book that leads you down the rabbit hole one chapter at a time. Every time you think you have things figured out, the book takes a stranger turn. This is truly a book that you won’t figure out till the very end – and yet, you’ll spend nearly the whole time you’re reading thinking you know what is coming next. It’s a curious mix of leading you into the story and then whamming you in the face with an unexpected plot twist that you inexplicably love. There’s so much to this story that it would be easy to feel overwhelmed, but somehow it all works.
