What is happening this week in the entertainment world?

Skyfall made its way back to the #1 box office slot this past weekend, making it the highest grossing movie in Sony Pictures History. It’s only the second film to top the box office charts in its 5th week in theaters, Avatar being the only other film to do so. This weekend has brought the films North American total to a stunning $261.1 million. Source.

Tom Hardy has signed on to star as Sam Fisher in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, based off of the six games by Ubisoft. New Regency will develop the film with Ubisoft and Eric Warren Singer (Æon Flux) will develop the script. New Regency and Ubisoft are also collaborating on the Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender. Source.

The NY Times unveiled a list of Hollywood’s Heroines this week acknowledging the new direction films have taken this year. Kick ass female characters as well as female lead films are becoming more common and perhaps more importantly more bankable. The list includes actresses such as Anne Hathaway (Dark Knight Rises), Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games), Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect), Kerry Washington (Scandal) among manyothers.  Check out the interesting slide show of honorees here.

Disney has decided to go ahead with plans for a sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 film Alice in Wonderland. While many may wonder why, as the film was seen as lackluster in both special effects and storyline by critics. What you may not be aware of is that the film made $1billion dollars world wide, making it a financial smash.  However Burton has not signed on for the project as of yet, if he doesn’t will it be possible to find someone with the director’s imaginative style to continue the saga?  Source.

The Hobbit camp has released a new image from the trilogy’s second film The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. The still features Bilbo with what looks to be a shocked expression while balancing on a large pile of gold. Can we assume this is Biblo’s first glimpse of the infamous dragon Smaug? “The dragon is a huge, wonderful, amazing part of [the second film], but it doesn’t end there,” said writer/producer Philippa Boyens. “Everyone can suspect there’s a rather large battle in film three.” Source.

On a related note, the first 9 minutes of the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness will begin running this week preceding the IMAX version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  If your hoping to finally get an answer as to exactly who it is that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing though, you may be out of luck according to an early review. However you can look forward to a couple funny moments between Kirk and McCoy as well as Uhura and Spock.  Source.

HBO has greenlit a pilot for a live action show entitled Silicon Valley from creator Mike Judge. Judge is the mind behind Office Space, King of the Hill and Beavis and Butthead. The show will be a single-camera comedy set in the high-tech, high demand community of Silicon Valley. A place Judge describes as where “the most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.”  Source.

Kristen Stewart is set to star in the upcoming film Focus alongside Ben Affleck. The film centers around Stewart an inexperienced con artist who teams up with Affleck’s character, a more seasoned grifter who eventually falls for her, according to hitfix.com. The film is being written and directed by the team of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra who proved their writing chops by penning an interesting and smart romcom in the form of Crazy Stupid Love. The real question is can Kristen Stewart be funny? I mean intentionally…    Source.

Jumanji will soon be getting a reboot, the unexpected news has had mixed responses. Some excited for the remergance of a classic childhood film while others see this as yet another example of the lack of original ideas coming out of big Hollywood studios. However the film has secured Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) to write the script so maybe it’s time to keep out minds open. Source.

It’s true! The Tardis will be getting a new interior in the upcoming series of Doctor Who. A teaser image has just hit the web but you’ll have to wait for the upcoming Christmas special to see the full unveiling! Source.
