Animal Crossing: New Leaf Blocks Black Ops II From #1 Debut In Japan

Animal Crossing: New Leaf held onto the top spot in Japan’s weekly sales charts for the third straight time last week, forcing Call of Duty: Black Ops II to settle for a second place debut.

Total sales for Animal Crossing: New Leaf dropped 26% week-over-week to 213K copies, putting it just ahead of Black Ops II‘s 197K units sold on the PS3 (the Xbox 360 version of Activision’s military shooter debuted at #6, with 22K units sold). In total the 3DS claimed half of the spots on the top 20 software sales chart, followed 6 PS3 titles, 3 PSP titles, and 1 for the Xbox 360. Not surprisingly, the PS Vita was once again shut out of Japan’s top 20 software sales chart.

The continued success of the latest Animal Crossing – combined with top ten debuts for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, E.X. Troopers, and Dangerous Ji-San – resulted in an additional 162K 3DS systems sold during the week (down slightly from 168K in the prior week). Overall, Nintendo’s 3DS sales represented just over 70% of all video game hardware units sold in Japan last week.

Year-to-date the 3DS stands at 4.1 million units sold (up from 2.6 million this time last year), with life-to-date Japanese sales nearing 8.5 million units. For comparison, Sony’s PlayStation Vita has sold a mere 612K units YTD (9.7K last week), and only 1.052 million LTD.
