A look at Superman’s new look.

Zack Snyder , The director of the upcoming Superman film ‘Man of Steel’, says he struggled when it came to the hero’s iconic costume.  “The costume was a big deal for me, and we played around for a long time,” Snyder says. “I tried like crazy to keep the red briefs on him. Everyone else said, ‘You can’t have the briefs on him.’ I looked at probably 1,500 versions of the costumes with the briefs on.” (NY Post) But ultimately it was decided that they did not correlate with the more serious look the production was going for.

The film, which promises to present the Man of Steel in a gritty and more realistic fashion than past versions depicted by Christopher Reeves and Brandon Routh, believe that this slight wardrobe change will help to set that tone. Indeed from the pictures we’ve seem that seems to be the case. The suit, worn by the film’s star Henry Cavill, takes on a more armored appearance with the lack of briefs while other staples of the outfit are still intact, such as the cape, red boots and the iconic Superman emblem across the chest.

However there are obvious changes from the classic blue and red spandex of past incarnations. The silver accents along the waist and wrists, for instance, call to mind Thor more than Superman, as well as the odd rubber trail that cuts across his abs to encircle a gold bit. One assumes this is meant to pay homage to where the briefs would be on the classic costume but, if we’re honest, only serves to highlight the awkward bulge beneath.

The overall spirit of the original costume seems to be intact, however, and is perhaps more fitting when trying to capture that down to earth feel that Nolan perfected in his Batman franchise. Cavill has confirmed that he has signed on for three movies as the original Man of Steel; an obvious indication that DC is hoping to catch up with Marvel Studio’s successes with it cadre of characters.

What are your thoughts on Superman’s stripped down look?
