Fans of 2003′s MMOFPS PlanetSide have been long anticipating its sequel, and have today been rewarded for their patience with the official launch of the rather obviously titled PlanetSide 2.

Aiming to be a retelling of the first game’s event rather than a direct follow on, it follows the same elements of having hundred or even thousands of players fighting pitched battles for control of the planet Auraxis. With the same three factions to choose to support – the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate or Vanu Sovereignty – and six types of class, modifiable with skill trees, the game looks to build on what made the original appeal.

However, will this be enough? The original suffered from dwindling population and numerous server merges. Developers Sony Online Entertainment promise that gamer feedback has been taken into account, as well as the improved hardware available and new features expected after almost a decade of other first person shooter releases.

Perhaps the biggest selling point in its favour will be the price tag – which is to say, nothing. The title is free-to-play from launch, although as is expected for f2p titles has a real-cash shop selling various extras.

The launch trailer (as linked above) perhaps shows Sony’s confidence in the new game, using in-game graphics instead of pre-rendered scenes. And naturally, also showing many, many things exploding.

Peter can be described as an old, hairy gamer, a survivor of the console wars of the 1990s, and a part-time MMO addict. He has an especial fondness for retro gaming and observing the progressions in long running gaming series. When scandalously not caught gaming, he can also be found reading comics and fantasy fiction, or practising terrible photography.
