Animal Crossing: New Leaf‘s debut made a big splash  in Japan last week hitting the top of the charts with 603K copies sold, and more than doubling week-over-week 3DS sales to 187K units.

The strong launch for Animal Crossing: New Leaf (which is called Animal Crossing: Jump Out in Japan) brought the total number of 3DS software titles in the top 20 chart to 8, matching the number of PS3 titles in the chart. The PSP claimed 2 spots, followed by 1 each for the Xbox 360 (Halo 4 debuted in the 3rd spot) and DS (Pokemon Black/White 2 in the 15th spot).

Nintendo’s 3DS was the only video game system (in the top half of the chart) to increase its weekly sales totals, and easily held onto the top position. Sony’s PS3, PSP, and PS Vita landed in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th spots respectively. Vita sales were especially hard hit in the charts and fell from 4,842 units in the prior week to just 4,021 units last week, representing another new all-time low for Sony’s latest handheld.

The full Japanese hardware and software sales charts for the week ending November 11, 2012 are as follows:
