Microsoft revealed in their first quarter earnings report that the company shipped 1.7 million Xbox 360 units during the three months ending September 30, 2012. This increases their total shipments of the console to 70 million units worldwide since it launched in 2005.

How that 70 million shipped number translates into an actual worldwide user base is anyone’s guess. Considering the high failure rate of the Xbox 360 prior to the release of “S” model in 2010, it would be reasonable to assume that the console’s actual user base is significantly smaller than 70 million. However, Microsoft has never been forthcoming with the 360′s real failure rate during those first five years, so it is likely we will never know for sure.

Both Nintendo and Sony should be providing updated sales numbers for their current-gen consoles within the next few weeks. Until then, we know from the latest financial reports that LTD Wii shipments are at least 96.5 million, and the PS3 is a minimum of 63.9 million worldwide.

Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division posted $1.95 billion in revenue for the first quarter, a decrease of 1% year-over-year. Operating income for the division fell to just $19 million from $340 million in the same period last year.
