According to Media Create, life-to-date sales of the PlayStation Vita crossed the 1 million mark last week after 42 weeks on retailer shelves. Unfortunately for Sony, the good news coincides with the handheld’s weekly sales falling from (an already low) 14K in the prior week to just 7.9K.

Pouring additional rain on Sony’s parade is the fact that it took the Vita 42 weeks to reach the milestone. To put in perspective just how bad things are, the Nintendo 3DS (which was not exactly blazing sales records after it launched) topped 3.6 million units sold in Japan during its first 42 weeks, and currently 3DS sales stand at 7.6 million units LTD in Japan.

On the software charts Capcom found success with Resident Evil 6, which debuted as the best-seller in Japan last week with 634.9K units sold on the PS3 and an additional 41.6K on the Xbox 360.

The remainder of the top 20 software sales chart in Japan consisted of seven titles on the 3DS, five PS3, five PSP, and one each for the Xbox 360, DS, and Wii.

The full Japanese hardware and software sales charts for the week ending October 07, 2012 are as follows:
